How long have American Indians been in the Americas?

The question of how long American Indians have been in the Americas has always been of long-standing controversy. Early theories followed a Clovis-first model that argued for only 12,000-10,000 years of history. Well, in a recent book, Dr. Peter N. Jones argues that based on genetic and other evidence this date can be pushed back quite some bit. Respect for the Ancestors argues that American Indians first came to the Western Hemisphere via a Northwest Coast Route perhaps 20,000 plus years ago. Furthermore, the book also argues for long-term cultural affiliation between today’s American Indian tribes of the American West and those of the first Americans.
