Dealing with ADHD Kids By Deploying “Angry Monster”

Dealing with ADHD kids is not an easy task. One of the major “headaches” is dealing with their temper tantrums. ADHD kids are generally very stubborn and would throw tantrums whenever things do not go their way or they do not get what they wanted. One method to help them control this tantrum is to create an imaginary “angry monster”. Use creative means to tell the kid that whenever they get angry, an “angry monster” will arise inside them to control them, thus making them having a temper. This will help the ADHD child dissociate himself from the temper and see it as something negative. Train the kid to do the following to overcome the “angry monster”. Whenever the kid realises that the “angry monster” is about to awaken, he should excuse himself from the situation immediately and go somewhere quiet. They should say something like “excuse me, I have to go tame a monster”. When at the quiet place, they should take lots of deep breaths (at least 20). While doing that, they should say to themselves “calm down, relax, relax, and angry monster will go away.” They should keep doing this until the “angry monster” has disappeared, by which time the temper would have perished. Do give it a try.
