Mind Your Language When Dealing With ADHD

Children with ADHD often have very low self-esteem. Understandable, because they feel they are the outcast of society and thus does not “fit in” to the “system”. Because of this negative emotional state, parents and teachers should be careful with the words they use when dealing with them.

For example, try not to use the word “Relax” too freely. If you apply it in the wrong context, the poor kid may actually tensed up more. Phrases like “This medicine will help make you smarter” may actually backfire. To the kid, it may actually come across as a confirmation of sort that they are indeed stupid. How about “Get organised, its easy”? The kid may be thinking “Everyone is saying getting organised is easy but I just don’t understand why. Therefore, I must be stupid and a total loser”.

So when around ADHD kids, please do mind your language.
